Change in facial appearance due to aging
One of the phenomena of looking older due to aging is sagging of the cheeks. When the cheeks sag, characteristic wrinkles occur from the nose to the corners of the mouth and create the so-called laugh lines. When the cheeks sag, it looks like the corners of the mouth are sagging too and gives the face the appearance of aging.
There is variation among individuals depending on the constitution of the cheek sagging and their lifestyle habits, but in early cases this phenomenon can begin to appear in the late 30's to early 40's.
If the amount of sagging is minor, these wrinkles can be treated to some degree with injections, such as hyaluronic acid.
If the amount of sagging exceeds a certain limit, however, the wrinkles cannot be eliminated with any amount of hyaluronic acid injections and it is not possible to hide the look of the overall sagging of the cheeks.
The main cause of sagging around the cheeks is the structure of the face.
The face is formed from bones, muscles, connective tissue that contains fat, and the skin that covers these.
As you can tell by touching your face, there is very little subcutaneous tissue, which contains the muscle and fat, above the forehead, nose, and cheek bones, and these immediately contact the bones under the skin.
So excessive sagging does not occur in these areas of the face.
So where are the areas that do not contact the bone and have a lot of muscle and fat? That is the cheeks.
As people age, the fibers in the muscle and connective tissue lose their elasticity and look like they are being pulled down by gravity.
The areas that sag the most easily are the cheeks, which are structured only of soft tissues, such as muscle, fat, and connective tissue.
So in the worst case if left untreated, the cheeks will hang down creating the so-called bulldog look.
Once skin has sagged, it is also most impossible to restore it using just minor plastic surgery.
As described below, there are various treatments for the aged look caused by wrinkling and sagging of the face.
・Injecting substances, such as hyaluronic acid or Aquamid, are effective for treating wrinkles that have already appeared.
・Expression wrinkles, such as on the corners of the eyes, between the eyes, and the forehead, can be very effectively treated using Botox to weaken the strength of the muscles.
・For the overall vitalization and youthfulness of the facial skin, aesthetic dermatology treatments, such as beauty creams, vitamin C introduction, and chemical peeling, are also effective.
・Recently a device called a thermacool that applies a specific wavelength energy (radio waves) to the skin has been developed and shows promise for obtaining an effect close to that of a face lift. There are high expectations for thermacool as a non-surgical treatment for wrinkles.
・There is also a treatment called aptos lift that uses cables. An aptos lift embeds threads of polypropylene in the subcutaneous tissue to activate the connective tissue of the subcutaneous tissue and improve the sagging.
This method is very effective in preventing further sagging rather than pulling up existing sagging.
・Using gold thread for the cables has an action mechanism different from that of aptos that is effective in improving cheek sagging. The gold thread is embedded under the skin, and the biological reaction to the gold thread increases substances, such as collagen, that prevent skin sagging. Therefore, embedding gold thread improves the elasticity of the skin to make it more beautiful and improves cheek sagging.
If you want a more effective improvement for cheek sagging, then face lift treatment is recommended.
There are a variety of face lift treatments depending on the patient's age and symptoms.
